Wayfinding Project
This was a multi-part project. Partnered up into groups of two, we were assigned to look around downtown to identify any opportunities that could benefit from a design intervention. After some investigation, we found problems with the directory system at the Museum of Natural Sciences. For example, there are accessibility issues for children and wheelchair-bound patrons, where signage is placed too high on the walls, and obstructions such as large trash cans block their paths. In addition, signage uses varying fonts and lacks hierarchy, making them difficult to recognize in new areas.
After identifying this as an opportunity, we contacted the museum and interviewed a senior exhibit designer to understand their signage goals and problems from their perspective. Based on our research and our interview, we designed a solution - the creation of digital directories. In addition to allowing museum visitors to search exhibits by keyword and print directions, the directories also have an accessibility feature that lowers the screen to a reasonable height for wheelchair users. The printed directions feature unique illustrations based on the exhibit visitors are looking for, allowing them to take home a free souvenir.
